Treasurer’s Report 司庫報告書 (Expressed in Hong Kong dollars) The University of Hong Kong 香港大學 1 （以港幣列賬） OVERVIEW The financial year 2020-21 was the second year of the 2019-22 triennium. In face of the persistence of the COVID-19 pandemic locally and globally, the University has adopted measures to maintain a safe and healthy environment on campus while gradually resuming its normal activities such as face-to-face interactions with students. With strong commitment to serve the society, the University has provided various supports in combating against COVID-19. The Group has demonstrated its commitment to provide world-class education and research and delivered the impact through internationalisation, innovation and interdisciplinarity. During the financial year, the Group recorded a surplus of $3,439 million, reflecting the results of the market recovery and internal cost saving initiatives. In preparing the consolidated financial statements, the Group has adopted certain new/revised Hong Kong Financial Reporting Standards (“HKFRS”) issued by the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants which are relevant and applicable to the Group’s operation and comply with the Statement of Recommended Practice for the University Grants Committee (“UGC”) – Funded Institutions. INVESTMENTS Investment return for the year 2020-21 was strong and exceeded previous years. Investment assets benefitted from the robust performance of global stock markets. The Group continues to adopt a prudent, disciplined, diversified and long-term approach in managing its investments and achieved an overall investment profit of $3,302 million (2019-20: $533 million). Value of the Group’s investment as of 30 June 2021 was $29,894 million (2019-20: $26,162 million). RESEARCH GRANTS In addition to funding basic research infrastructure through the block grant, the UGC also provides earmarked grants via the Research Grants Council (“RGC”) under various funding schemes for bidding by individual principal investigators or institutions. A total of $299 million (2019-20: $300 million) of RGC grants was recognised as income by the University during the year. In addition, the University received a total of $255 million (2019-20: $239 million), presented under deferred income from the UGC’s Research Matching Grant Scheme. Other than the grants from UGC, the Group also received grants from various local and non-local government agencies and related organisations for research purposes. For the financial year 2020-21, $342 million (2019-20: $283 million) was recorded as income in the consolidated statement of comprehensive income. DONATIONS Donations totaling $580 million (2019-20: $1,232 million) were recorded as income in the consolidated statement of comprehensive income, of which $365 million (2019-20: $837 million) was for research; $41 million (2019-20: $54 million) for capital building and alterations, additions and improvement projects; $72 million (2019-20: $102 million) for scholarships, bursaries, prizes and loans; and $102 million (2019-20: $239 million) for various other purposes. 本年度的合併支出較去年輕微增加約百分之一， 合共為一百一十二億五千一百萬元（上年度為一 百一十億九千二百萬元），其中八十三億五千八 百萬元（上年度為八十億五千六百萬元）用於本機 構的各項教學及研究活動。 投資 二零二零╱二一年度投資回報表現強勁並超越過 往多年。投資資產因環球股市強勁表現從而得 益。本機構繼續採取謹慎守紀、多元化及長期持 有等方針管理其投資項目，並錄得總投資收益共 三十三億零二百萬元（上年度為五億三千三百萬 元）。 以二零二一年六月三十日市值計算，本機構投 資總值為二百九十八億九千四百萬元（上年度為 二百六十一億六千二百萬元）。 科研補助金 教資會除了運用「整體撥款」資助基礎研究基建 項目外，教資會亦透過研究資助局（「研資局」） 推出不同資助計劃，提供指定補助金，讓首席研 究員或院校透過競逐撥款方式，爭取款項以支持 研究。是年度大學獲得研資局的補助金撥款合共 二億九千九百萬元（上年度為三億元）。 此外，教資會亦透過研究配對補助金計劃提供 配對補助金以供院校配對。本年度大學共收到 二億五千五百萬元（上年度為二億三千九百萬元） 並呈報在遞延收益內。 除了教資會的資助外，本機構還從不同的本地及 非本地政府機構和相關組織獲得用於研究用途的 補助金。本年度合共獲得三億四千二百萬元（上 年度為二億八千三百萬元），在合併綜合收益表 中以收益入賬。 捐助 合併綜合收益表中的捐助總數為五億八千萬 元（上年度為十二億三千二百萬元），其中 三億六千五百萬元（上年度為八億三千七百萬元） 用於研究；四千一百萬元（上年度為五千四百萬 元）用於校舍基建與改建、加建及改善工程等項 目；七千二百萬元（上年度為一億零二百萬元） 用作獎學金、助學金、獎金及貸款；以及一億零 二百萬元（上年度為二億三千九百萬元）用於其他 用途。
